Times tables to twelve

The squares run down the diagonal. Most children learn these out of order — twos, fives and tens first, then threes and fours, with sevens and eights usually last. The grid is here to check against, not to memorise in one sitting.

The written methods

These are the standard algorithms the sets assume. When answers keep coming out wrong it is usually one step of the method slipping, which is worth finding before drilling more questions at the same speed.

Column addition

Add the ones first. Anything ten or over carries into the next column.

How a set runs

  1. Pick a skill. Or keep the one from last time — the set opens where the last one stopped.
  2. Answer ten. A wrong answer shows the worked result before the next question, rather than only marking it wrong.
  3. Read the streak. Ten in a row closes the set. A miss resets it, which is the point: the streak measures consistency, not total attempts.

For teachers

Sets are short on purpose — a warm-up, not a lesson. There is no account and no data collected, so a class can start on any device without setup, and nothing needs approval from a district IT policy.

If you want a specific skill or number range that is not listed, it is usually a small change to add.

Common questions

Does a child need an account?
No. Nothing is stored and nothing is sent anywhere, so a set can be started on a shared or borrowed device without signing in.
Why does the streak reset on a single miss?
Because it is measuring whether a skill is secure, not how many questions have been attempted. A count that only goes up hides the one wrong answer in ten, which is usually the interesting one.
How long should a session be?
One set, most days, beats a long session once a week. Ten questions takes a few minutes, which is short enough to finish — and finishing matters more than volume at this age.
My child knows the method but is still slow. Is that a problem?
Not on its own. Recall speed usually follows understanding by several months. It only matters when it is slow enough that the child loses track of the larger problem they were solving.
Does it work offline?
Yes, once the page has loaded. Questions are generated in the browser, so a dropped connection mid-set changes nothing.
Is it free?
Yes, and there is nothing to upgrade to. No adverts and no tracking.
